Backyard Patio Expansion with Natural Boulder Retaining Wall
This project features a natural boulder retaining wall built to extend the backyard patio, adding usable outdoor space while providing lasting support and a beautiful natural appearance.
Every long-lasting boulder retaining wall begins with a solid foundation. In this phase of the project, we are excavating the retaining wall footing to the engineered depth before placing and compacting crushed gravel to create a stable, well-drained base. This foundation helps distribute the weight of the wall, minimizes settlement, improves drainage, and provides the long-term stability needed to support the natural boulder retaining wall for years to come.
The base course is the backbone of every natural boulder retaining wall. During this phase, our team precisely positioned the largest boulders to establish a stable, interlocking foundation capable of supporting the wall above. Filter fabric was then installed behind the wall to prevent soil from washing into the drainage rock while maintaining proper water flow. Combined with quality backfill materials, this drainage system helps minimize erosion, relieve hydrostatic pressure, and extend the life of the retaining wall for decades.
The completed natural boulder retaining wall transformed the backyard by creating a larger, level patio while blending seamlessly with the surrounding landscape.
